TIL that in 1985, police engaged in a standoff with the black liberation group ‘MOVE’ at their home in Philadelphia. A massive firefight ensued in which the police used choppers to drop two C4 bombs on the roof. The fire destroyed 65 houses and 11 people died.

Half of the people who died in the bombing were children. The youngest of whom was only seven. Two hundred and fifty people were left homeless. When the bomb was dropped, the firefighters were ordered to stand back and not do anything to help. Police shot people as they tried to escape. And while the city apologized and called the bombing “unconscionable” the only person who was ever criminally charged in the affair was Ramona Africa, the sole adult survivor of the bombing.

Seriously, every single American should be required to learn about the MOVE bombing.

Look, I know I’m coming off as a real cold, heartless asshole when I say that I do not support federal workers protesting their paused income, and I also know that it’s harsh to say I want IRS and FDA workers to fuck themselves. Believe it or not, I do have empathy for the individuals and families that are suffering from this shutdown. They are real people, and deserve the charity and support of their communities as much as anyone else facing hardship. I think the difference is, because they made the decision to work for the federal government initially, I put the responsibility of correcting their situation and learning from their mistakes firmly on the federal workers’ shoulders. (And for some, this is more than a situation, but a full on crisis). I just come to a full stop when they protest and demand that the shutdown to end so they can get back to their bureaucratic bullshit as usual. No, fuck off. You’re paid with stolen, illegitimate funds by a corrupt, illegitimate authority. It’s time to rethink!

No, the postman, park ranger, FBI agent, and NSA worker are not all the same, and certainly not all evil. Nearly all government organizations also employ people who perform mundane, generic work that could be found in most any other company or bureaucracy that has little weighing on whether or not we peasants are oppressed. Not every individual working for every government agency is a bad person - obviously. They are still responsible for their small part in maintaining a functioning and ever-growing leviathan. And they should take a government shutdown thanks to the absolute madhouses that are the US Congress and White House as an opportunity to get out of government work, not to protest in expectation of getting back to work. Just in case it’s unclear still, I literally want to abolish every aspect of the federal government. Literally.
